Role: Animator – Voice Actor// Major: Media and Information
Hi! My name is Paul Powell II, and I’m a 3D animator and voice actor from Grass Lake, Michigan. A serious love of storytelling and a lifelong passion for video games have led me to the Game Design and Development program here at Michigan State University, and I’m thrilled to be here! MSU Game Dev is an ultra-innovative and collaborative environment, where we all push each other to improve every day, while still doing everything we can to lift each other up and share as much knowledge as we can. I have had the opportunity to work with some incredibly talented classmates to finish five games, and am learning a ton throughout the process.
I also work in the GEL (Games for Entertainment and Learning) Lab, where our mission is to advance digital games as a vehicle for research, social change, education, and fun, just to name a few things. You can check us out at gel.msu.edu. Since I have had the pleasure of joining the team, I have worked with clients on three contracted games. These games cover diverse subject matter ranging from discovering rare isotopes using a cyclotron, to encouraging children to practice healthier eating and exercising habits, to teaching high school students about financial literacy. My experience in the GEL has been invaluable, and I’m so thankful for the experience!
Life has a peculiar way of nudging you in the right direction. Thinking back, maybe I can see the signs of a future love of animation. I spent so many childhood days reenacting watering hole ambushes and legendary hunts with my dinosaur toys. Those days lead up to the first time I slotted a Pokémon Snap cartridge into my Nintendo 64. I had been playing video games a lot before then, but this game was different. To see my favorite characters transformed from pixelated sprites on my Gameboy screen, into running, jumping, thriving creatures, living in the environment around me: it blew me away. As an animator, that moment of childhood wonder is my inspiration. I adore being responsible for breathing life into the inhabitants of the worlds I work in.
